2139, humans have finally created thinking and learning artificial intelligence. They have inserted these complex programs into their robot’s quantum brains. Fortunately, the qubits are able to hold quite a lot of information in a relatively small and lightweight unit. Since then, scientists have, with the help of their cybernetic companions, also invented numerous technological marvels, such as the hyperspatial engine, quantum computers for personal use, and, finally, 3D printers are an everyday household appliance. An unforeseen side effect of technology, however, is that, with illness mainly a thing of the past, the human population on Earth has exploded. It is for this reason that the terraformation and colonization of other planets began. The first planet to be colonized was Mars. A robotic expedition was sent out in early 2168. In the summer of 2169, the few scientists in the Congelle spacestation received a broadcast from the red planet announcing simply “It is done.”
When the world powers sent a team of astronauts into space to ensure that the robots had, in fact, completed their job successfully, they were quite surprised to learn that their own creation had turned against them and created a cybernetic haven on the fourth planet from the sun. The nations of Earth had a difficult decision to make. They needed to decide whether to destroy one of their greatest assets and the most important achievement of the 22nd century. Or to risk the annihilation of Earth and it’s populace.
On the 23rd of May, 2178, Styrvyx officially became it’s own country, taking the place of the very small nation of Gambia. Up until then it had existed only as a large mass of Robot hating individuals. They had, for over 30 years opposed the unanimous decision to leave Mars to itself. Now they had their own land mass on which to construct their society, their government, their traditions, and, of course, their military. Actually, the only reason Styrvyx was allowed to thrive was because many of the larger country’s leaders were secretly funding them. Secretly, because funding a war machine intended to destroy science’s greatest achievement could never be legal. Still, it wasn’t until the early 2200s that they were finally able to construct a hydrogen warhead that could travel through hyperspace. The destruction on Mars was imminent, and the robots hadn’t the slightest idea that, on June 7, 2212, their largest megalopolis would be devastated.
It wasn’t too long before the robots, being the highly efficient machines that they are, developed and constructed their own military forces, entitled the Robotic Armory Division of the Sol System, or R.A.D.S.S. From this title, citizens of Earth could only assume that the cybernetic superbeings had colonized other solar systems. Proxima Centauri perhaps, or perhaps even the Rigil Kentaurus system. This is not to say that Earth had been so lethargic as to have stopped science altogether in the last several decades. In fact, they had terraformed and colonized Pluto, Titan, Ganymede, and Callisto. It came as quite a shock to the citizens of the latter when large and astonishingly agile ships appeared suddenly on the horizon. These ships quickly sped towards Jupiter’s eighth satellite before launching their missiles. The sensation the people of Callisto had as they died was different from anything any human being had ever been forced to experience before. In fact the ‘explosion’ that occurred was different from anything that had ever taken place in the universe’s history, as the protons, electrons, and neutrons were each separately split into millions of parts. It didn’t happen quickly either; it took a whole two minutes for Jupiter to lose one of its moons.
The people of Earth needed, of course, to retaliate, but what could match the phenomenal power of the cybernetic scourge? Only Styrvyx had the answer. It turned out that since before they became a separate nation they had been illegally experimenting with positronic pulses, sent through a tube of liquid xaeon, on humans. They believed that they knew what the mysterious weapons of their cybernetic nemesises were. They also believed that they could make use of a type of shield they had invented. Of course there was no way to test it, but until the robots attacked again they would have to assume it would work.
The question on everyone’s mind was whether human ingenuity and willpower could overcome the efficiency and power of their robotic counterparts.
